Rest In Peace DJ AM..

Man.. I don’t even know what to say right now.. I guess this is just another reminder from above, that life is very, very short.  There is no need to hold grudges against each other, or hate on one another, like so many people do – day in, and day out. There is no point.  We are all here for a reason.. Adam Goldstein aka DJ AM inspired & motivated me, and most likely thousands of other DJs.  He was an innovator and a trend setter who pushed boundaries and was one of the first to really break ‘the dj’ into the same limelight as ‘the artist’.  All of that aside, he was simply a dope technical & conceptual DJ as well..

While news reports are saying he died of drug-related causes [hard to believe, as he said he never drank anything, and had no alcohol on his rider], I just hope that some of his younger fans take this in stride as a learning lesson.. Drugs are no joke; they will consume your life and are simply not worth it.

Although I did not know him personally, I had the pleasure of playing a party with him only a few months back in February [ see: Opening For DJ AM ] & he was one of the coolest, level-headed, and most humble DJs that I have had the chance to play alongside. Thanks for motivating me.. Rest In Peace.

My People’s GMAN & RIZK Open ‘Soundbreaking’ New Club

1889449

Like the cookie that shares its name, Fortune is a revelation.

Just opened in the space at 147 E. Pender St. that was most recently the Royal Unicorn Cabaret, Vancouver’s newest nightclub/live-music venue is the realization of a dream long held by business partners Garret Louie and Robert Rizk, a.k.a. GMAN and Rizk, two of the most respected nightlife promoters in the city…

“To me it’s very appealing to have a warm sound and to not so much hear music but feel music,” says Rizk. “I mean if you’re a nightclub your main product is sound; it’s music. Booze is secondary. I think for most clubs . . . booze is primary. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing — but you can drink anywhere.”

To that end, Rizk sought out the suppliers of a system dubbed Funktion-One. And before securing the only such audio set-up in all of Western Canada, Rizk recalls how he had to endure an application process that involved an interview where he was asked questions “that had nothing to do with sound.”

“They had to do with who I am as a person,” Rizk says. “I wasn’t going to do this project if I couldn’t do it with this sound system.”

Congrats guys.. Can’t wait to hear how crispy those monitors sound in the booth!

‘Social Experiment’ 1 Yr Anniversary Tonight

social-experiment-one-year-back-550x275

In August 2008, after a long hiatus, DJ Mensa tested out the waters of Toronto club scene to see if there was still a need for his brand of musical flavor. On a whim, he conducted his own “social experiment” and threw an impromptu jam mid-week to see what kind of response he could get. With minimal promo, the night was a success, and Mensa has rolled on with the name that captures the essence of he’s been conducting: a Social Experiment.

What has started as a hole-in-the-wall haven for the city’s in-the-know music lovers, has become the premier Thursday to hear those unearthed musical gems never touched by any traditional club night. Not for the fairweather or faint of ear.

To commemorate the occasion, DJ Mensa continues his acclaimed weekly ritual for friends and first-timers alike with a very special guest:

DJ Wristpect
2009 Stylus Canadian DJ of the Year
Smash Squad DJs // Wristpect.com

The best out to do it right now is rolling by to throw down whatever the eff he wants. Do tell a friend and make an appearance, as this night will definitely go down as one for the record books.
