TED Names 2011 Fellows

tedjpeg

I’m very proud and excited to announce that one of my good friends – Yale fox, has been selected as 1 of 200 presenters from around the world at this year’s coveted TED speaker series.

“It’s with much honor to announce today that I’ve fulfilled one of my life goals, and have been selected from thousands of applicants for a 2011 TED Fellowship. If you don’t know what TED is, it’s time to find out. TED is a non-profit organization based on forward thinking individuals and ideas that are worth spreading. Past speakers include Sir Richard Branson, Al Gore and Bill Gates to name a few. I’ll be presenting some of my research at this year’s conference.

Here’s a link to the official press release – they actually mentioned me specifically which is pretty awesome. You can find more information on their site here. For those of you that are wondering, tickets for this conference are around $4000 and they sell out a year in advance. Here’s a list of the other Fellows that I’ll be speaking with:

James Patten (US) A US-based inventor who is exploring new ways that physical objects can represent and control digital information

Chris Woebken (US / Germany) A German-American interaction designer whose installations create novel relationships between humans and animals

Yara Shaban (Jordan) A Jordanian electrical engineer who’s working to engage women in technology education and development in the Middle East

Camille Seaman (US) A Native American photographer whose work captures the harsh beauty of remote Arctic landscapes

Isabel Behncke Izquierdo (Chile / UK / DRC) A Chilean primatologist who studies play behavior among bonobos in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Prumsodun Ok (US / Cambodia) A Cambodian-American choreographer and performance artist whose work merges classical Cambodian and modern dance

Sey Min (Korea) A Korean data-visualization designer who works with live data sets to creatively display information

Luke Hutchison (US / New Zealand) A New Zealand-based computer scientist and computational biologist who is looking for the structural blueprints of life

Sumit Dagar (India) An Indian interaction designer and filmmaker working on the Braille Phone, a mobile phone for the blind

Indie Labes Dominate Over Major Labels In Grammy Nominations

grammy-473x600

Via darwinvsthemachine

For the first time ever, the 2011 Grammy awards is going to have a slightly different sound-scape.. Over half of the nominations (273 of the 542) are for artists whom belong to Indie Record labels. I think this is largely due to technology, and interestingly enough this is an indicator that the the major labels are finally starting to see the the lagging effects of music piracy. Ten years ago, the mp3 came out and the RIAA was infuriated with the degree of piracy, along with the fact that a number of artists signed to major labels were losing money in record sales. Finally, they are accepting defeat – realizing that purchasing music via albums and CDs is not a viable business model for 2011.

What I don’t think they expected was the drastic increase in technology and internet usage, resulting in what I call the “super-mp3″- where it is now the dominant format for the average music consumer. As a result of this, Indie record labels are now finally being recognized as equals with the majors as per public choice. This is a good thing, and is a necessary step in order for the music industry to regain profitability. The old models are dropping and new ones are coming about, including the much anticipated Google Music & Apple Streaming Music services.

It will now be much more possible for talented artists to ‘make it’, without necessarily being signed by one of the giants. Everyone is always stressing out over the out-dated music business models and what needs to change..

Personally, I think the artists that focus as much on their marketing are going to be the ones to make it big during the next decade.

Why The Office Is The Worst Place To Work

Sol Guy x TedxToronto – How To Be Powerful

via IAE

TEDxToronto is the largest TEDx conference for Toronto, Canada.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, it brings together the city’s foremost thought leaders, change makers and everyday people from each discipline and challenges them to deliver powerful, unforgettable and unique TEDxTalks.

The theme of the second annual conference was A Call to Action. A total of 300 spots were reserved for audience members, while thousands more across the country joined via satellite locations and live video stream.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

Halloween 2010 Recap..

This year’s Halloween Weekend was pretty crazy.. On Friday Oct 30 we were at Toronto’s biggest Halloween costume party inside Liberty Grand with over 5000 people in attendance.. The next day (Saturday, October 30) we flew to PEI for the first time (Eastern Canada) to play The Wave at University of PEI, along with our drummer – JB Allen. This party was a smash… Thus brings us to Halloween night, Sunday Oct 31. We took an evening flight back to Toronto which got me back just in time to play a set at TIME Nightclub, alongside my dude DJ Tilt. Another Halloween weekend, another series of good parties.. Videos & pics from all 3 nights below.
