Drake: Bridging The Gap – Toronto to NYC

In October 2007, I envisioned a mixtape project that would cross borders from one country to another. From one city to the next, I wanted to ‘Bridge The Gap’ and provide Toronto based artists, producers, labels etc. an outlet and opportunity to shine south of the border.

In December 2007, I put my ideas together and dropped BRIDGING THE GAP VOL. 1 – TORONTO TO NYC

It featured a freestyle by a 19 year old kid named Drake over Jay-Z’s classic, “Dead Presidents”

Listen – “Drake – Dead Presidents Freestyle”

3 years later and dude is in the studio with Jay-Z and even called it himself on the interlude to this freestyle.. All I can say is, congratulations homey.. The world is finally waking up 3 years later.. Get em’ !

Elevate @ CN Tower Re-Cap..

So last night, myself, Sir Lancelot & DJ Tilt played a party 1000 feet in the air, on top of the CN Tower while over looking the city of Toronto.. What can I say, it got smashed..! 1200 people, 2 floors, a lot of alcohol and good music made for a great night and a historic event.  Tickets were actually sold out 8 days before the party and a lot of people missed out.. It ended up getting pretty hectic in there, and I don’t know if the Canadian Government would be up to do it again (The CN Tower is a government building).  Either way, I was happy to be a part of it.. Big shouts to Kleen Media, Dynamite Events & Voice Marketing for pulling it off and making it happen!

This one will go down in the history books & is guaranteed to be crazy.. Imagine 1200 people, 1000 feet in the air, partying inside a glass room on top of the CN Tower, while overlooking the entire city?? Nuts. Shouts to Kleen Media for continuing to push the envelope in terms of booking amazing venues & throwing unique events.  Myself & Sir Lancelot will be rocking the Glass Room all night.   Oh yeah, It’s 8 days away and 84 tickets are left. If you slept, you are going to miss out.. Peace!

West Coast Canada Tour Pt. 3 Recap!

Here is a long overdue re-cap of the west coast tour pt. 3 I went on a couple of weeks ago with my MC, Sir Lancelot.  We played 8 days straight (Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue) across Whistler, Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, & Niagra.  Here is a quick rundown of how it went down!

Tues Morning (Feb 24th)
Flew out of Toronto at 6am, and the idiot girl beside me on the plane broke my favourite pair of shades.. Great start.  We got to Vancouver early Tuesday Morning..  Chilled out with DJ Tanner for the day & drove up to Whistler later that night to rock Savage Beagle w/ Faction Soundcrew.  Whistler was good, as per usual, and I played sets back and forth with Tanner & DJ Arems.  The vibes were big (it was Lancelot`s birthday the night before, so he decided to continue celebrating), it seems like everyone in that little mountain town is always out to just get drunk and have a good time.  Right after, we drove back down the mountain to Vancouver, making sure to make a pit stop at 7/11 on the drive back.  As far as the last pic in this set, I found these products on top of DJ Arems fridge – what the..!

Flying to the west coast, Westjet whatup
Idiot beside me on the plane broke my Goldenhorses
Faction Soundcrew Whatup?
It's a mystery..

Ahh Whistler, you never cease to surprise me

I thought she was the love of your life Lance?
It's a long drive to Whistler.. Midpoint 7/11 stops.

What THE?! This is what was on top of DJ Arems' fridge!

Wed Afternoon (Feb 25th)
Wednesday Morning, we took a bus, which then drove onto a boat, which then sailed to the island of Victoria.  Never before, have I been on a greyhound, which then proceeds to drive straight onto a boat, park, ride 1.5 hours across the water, get back on the bus, and drive off the boat..  Definitely weird, but also an interesting experience.. The boat itself was more like a 5-level cruise liner, complete with arcades, buffets, business lounges, and yes – used needle deposit boxes in the washroom :S The heroin problem is bad out there I guess.. After making it into Victoria, we checked in to the hotel, and played Felicita’s at The University of Victoria.

Asleep with the berry in my hands again.. busride, pre ferry ride to Victoria
one crazy boat
Only in vancouver can you dispense your dirty needles on public transit
the boat ride was really nice actually
dear sun, i shall be seeing more of you in Grenada
damn, we really do carry a lot of shit in our pockets

Thurs (Feb 26th)

We took the ferry ship back to Vancouver, cabbed it to the hotel downtown, checked in, went by the homie Hedspin’s crib where we got to preview some new remixes from Team Canada’s DJ Grandtheft. After kicking it with them for a bit, we went to Hunt.FM studio’s where I laid down another show/interview – which should be up in the podcast section any day now.  Straight from the studio it was back to the hotel to shower, get ready, and then walk down Granville St. to Tonic Nightclub where we played Thursday Night!

Headed back to Van..
Decent food on the boat, expensive as hell though

Fri (Feb 27th)

I woke up earlier in the day and dealt with a bunch of emails/business at the hotel, & then just worked on music for the rest of the evening till we ended up making our way to dinner at The Cactus Club Cafe (my homeboy Matty’s god brother is the head chef – he hooked it up large!)  The food, atmosphere, and service were all top-notch.. I can’t wait for this place to come to Toronto! After dinner, it was back to the hotel to get ready and head down to SHINE Nightclub, which we smashed on Friday Night..! After the club it was off to Korean Food with some promoters/friends, and then finally back to hotel at 5am.

Great food..

Saturday (Feb 28th)
This was our last day in Vancouver.. We hit up all the stores/boutiques in the city: Dipt, Complex, A-Life, Goodfoot, Stussy, Livestock, etc. Big shouts to all of our sponsors for taking care of as usual! After doing some shopping we linked with the homies Flipout & Jayswing for dinner at GUU (very good Japanese spot in Gastown) which, to my surprise ended up being a LOT of GREAT food.. After dinner, we headed back to the hotel, got ready, hit 94.5 The Beat FM radio show with Jay & Flipout where we met up with GMAN, and then headed to Gossip Nightclub (Big Up Saturdays) to play from 12-2am. After that, we went by Stone Temple to meet up with Craig from Frontline & DJ Scene 1 to say whatup, before heading back to the hotel and calling it a night.

Sun (March 1)
Sun morning had to wake up early, pack up the mess of a room that was clothes, computers, cables, wires, etc. scattered all over the place, check out and make it to the airport in time to catch our 1pm flight to Calgary, where we were playing that night. Big shouts to our cab driver on the way to the airport, because if it wasn’t for his driving, we would never have made it to the airport in time..  We landed in Calgary around 3pm, got together with some old friends, and caught up over dinner after having checked in to, yes, yet another hotel.  After dinner, it was off to Opus nightclub where we played Sunday Night. Ps. explain how we get to Milestones, and the damn sign in the door says `Closed For Spring Cleaning – Come Back In 2 Months` what the hell..

Mon (March 2)
Tour’s a wrap. Back to Toronto.. Rockwood Monday Night.. Yes, no night’s off.. On the flight I woke up to apple juice spilling all over my thigh/ass/leg which made for a really shitty plane ride back to Toronto.. As soon as we landed and grabbed our bags, we headed down to Rockwood Nightclub for Toronto`s local industry night which was packed – lot of new and old faces in the spot! I played a couple sets but in all honesty, was tired as helllll by this point!

Tues (March 3)
It’s now Tuesday, again..? Really? Geez. The whole week flew by.. We are in Niagra Falls every Tuesday for a New Residency @ Dragonfly Nightclub. Checked into another hotel, got ready, handled the club from 10-3, and finally got some SLEEEEEEEP.

We put in work.

2 New Colin Munroe Tracks

Yes Yes..! Wanted to hit you up with some new Colin Munroe…

First up is producer/MC 88-Keys’ (Mos Def, Scarface) remix to “Last Cause” off the Unsung Hero Mixtape. 88’s called it the Cause N’ Effect Remix and he tells me it’s perfect for getting my Frankie Valli on though that could be real ugly….

The other cut is called “I’m Fine” and features an appearance from Young Buck. Yes…that Young Buck. I know eh! WTF! But it’s good!! The track was produced by K-Salaam & Beatnick for the upcoming Where The Streets Have No Name project in conjunction with Imeem.com and IllRoots.com.

Niagara & This Is London w/ DJ AM & MSTRKRFT

Last Tuesday & Wednesday (Feb 10/11), I opened for DJ AM at Dragonfly Nightclub (Casino Niagara) & This Is London (Toronto).  He wasn’t able to make it to the venue in Niagra on Tuesday due to passport issues, so myself, DJ Crunch, & Sir Lancelot held it down all night and rocked Dragonfly till 3.30am.

Wednesday Night was a packed industry night downtown Toronto, despite the shitty weather and rain all night long.  The night went well, and AM most definitely did his thing and was a very humble dude, which is really refreshing to see… Got some crazy cuts too! JFK (MSTRKRFT) was also in the building and ended up going back to back on the set around 2.30 am!

W-Five Presents: THE MUSICAL BRAIN

Shout out to Jenno for forwarding this to me..

This six-part documentary is a very interesting and in-depth look at the science of our brain, and how it correlates directly with music.  For example, they studied Sting’s brain and how it works when creating melody’s in his head.. They also conduct studies with babies, and what our brain register’s as a ‘hit’.

Check this out when you get some spare time – well worth it!

Wristpect x The Clipse x Kid Cudi

Haven’t found time to update the blog/site for a little while; things have been hectic.  History was made today.. Barack Obama – President of The United States of America. I bet if I asked you to repeat that very sentence outloud 2 years ago, you would have laughed.  Is it really time for a new world order?  Time will tell.. Regardless, it is a proud moment for human beings in general, and I’m excited about where we stand, and where we are heading..!

One of my partner’s in crime, and my emcee Sir Lancelot along with DJ Tilt are actually in Washington as I type this.  Mediaphase (site will be up very shortly) booked them for Google’s aferparty for Obama’s Inauguration! It’s only 3 weeks into the year and the squad is already beginning to make history.  We don’t sleep.  You really shouldn’t either..

So as I was saying, we’re just about 3 weeks into the year, and it’s going to be a great ’09..

This past Thursday I got to re-connect with The Clipse (Malice, Pusha T, DJ Rick Geez).  Last time I was with them was in May of 2007 when I opened their concert here in Toronto.

Almost 2 years later, we met up again..

Last Thursday/Friday was a hectic 40 hours.. It went something like this:

I met up with DJ Rick Geez & Pusha T at the hotel.  We discussed the Bridging The Gap Mixtape movement, and it’s now official – Volume 4 will be Hosted by The Clipse, co-starring N.E.R.D. ! From Toronto, to Virgina, we stay building bridges and crossing borders. Pay attention!

DJ Wristpect x The Clipse - Bridging The Gap V4 Mixtape Coming Soon from DJ Wristpect on Vimeo.

After that, we took Rick Geez to the studio (see: 2 studios.. One of the 1200s at Remix was broken, so we had to relocate to another location) so he could record his mix show which he had to submit to the radio station in Virgina the next day..

Now by the time we got to the 2nd studio in the west end, it was already 11:30pm. He had to record an hour long mix, which brings us to 12.30 am..

Rick Geez (Clipse's DJ) Live in the Mix from DJ Wristpect on Vimeo.

Now in the midst of all this running around, I still had my club night in Guelph at Van Gogh’s going on.. The homies Tilt & Illiment were holding things down up there, but Lancelot and I still needed to go up and play our set before the night was over.. This is another 45 minute drive from Downtown Toronto lol

After dropping Rick Geez off back at the hotel after making sure he got his mixshow recorded, we made our way to Guelph.. We finally arrived there at 1.45am, and hopped straight on the tables!  It was a takeover, even though it was a short set, the vibe was crazy – lights on at 2.30 am and no one leaving the club till 3 am type of vibe. I love those nights..!  We are out there every Thursday at Van Gogh’s 2nd Floor – $2.50 drinks & $100 Grey Goose. Come through.

By the time I got home it was 5 am.. 4 1/2 hours later I was up and on the way to Seneca College to do a sound check. Famous was opening The Clipse show (they had two shows in one day, an early and a late night at Circa), and I was DJ’ing his set.  Ran into Malice, Pusha, Ab-Liva there once again:

The Clipse @ Seneca College 'Hot Damn' from DJ Wristpect on Vimeo.

After that it was off to Livestock, where they were promoting their new Play Cloths line:

While kicking it at Livestock, Kid Cudi passed through as well.. He’s a real humble dude & hopefully I will be able to bang out a mixtape with him around summer time.. Here are some more photos courtesy of PhotoWill:

Straight after that it was off to another out of town club gig in Waterloo.. Got home at 5am again.. 4 1/2 hours of sleep every 48 hours. That’s how it goes sometimes.. Till next time.. Peace!

Wristpect, Lancelot, JD Era opening Redman & Method Man Tour
